Main Truth: “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” Jeremiah 29:11
There is a lot of uncertainty in our world today and that uncertainty seems to be swallowing us up alive. Just about every source of comfort that came from the drumbeat of what used to be our norm, has been put to a screeching halt. Like a rug ripped right out from under us, the organizations, institutions and systems we once relied upon, as staples to our families and communities, are no longer in typical operation. Who would have thought the world could be put on pause like this? Schools, sports (on every level), restaurants, gyms, churches, salons and businesses of every kind can no longer provide us the same outlet, nor routine we once knew.
This stripping away has been extremely uncomfortable, at least for me. Couple the discomfort and uncertainty with various fears and concerns, it makes adapting quite difficult. I watch myself doing all sorts of things to get through. Sometimes it’s resisting, other times it’s escaping. I have times of false hope. I’ve tried complaining, planning, and when all else fails, just laughing. All these reactions are revealing as to what works and what doesn’t. What really helps us progress through?
There is one response I can rely on and that is what I wanted to share with you. It’s something so simple to do, but hard to remember in those moments, when I get the bad news or my patience runs thin. When my emotions are raging or my thinking is screaming and the pressure is high. It is in those moments that I must remember the response that works every time.
Look up means we take our attention off the thing that is creating the unrest and look up to the One who relieves the stress.
Look up means we shift our focus off the problem and onto the Provider.
Look up simply means we look to the Lord. We look to who He is. His character alone, like a mother’s comforting touch, eases every pain, loss or sorrow. His sovereignty and power converts the defeating sense of powerlessness to rest. Just a few focused minutes, meditating on WHO God is turns everything around.
I’ve tried looking to His promises and sometimes that works well, but it doesn’t always do the trick and can sometimes leave room for doubts saying, “But will He do this promise for me?” Looking up to WHO He is covers it all. He is love, and if He is love, then He loves me, and yes, He will fulfill His promises to me. Looking up to WHO He is, is the best first step in navigating through any change, loss or limitation. Circumstances may not change at that moment. The uncertainty may remain, but when I look up, I know God has me and all is well with my soul. I am safe and there’s nothing left to fear. Peace overcomes me because I know, God has a plan and it is good (Jeremiah 29:11).
I encourage you, today, to practice this simple response when you feel uncertainty knock. When the fears and concerns demand your attention, look up and embrace WHO holds your life and allow peace to comfort your every care. As you get the e-mails, see the texts and scroll social media throughout your day, resist any and all temptation to lose sight of His grace and His goodness. God has us. His Holy Spirit guides us and there is nothing we cannot overcome in and through Him.
